THE ROYAL SOCIETY
OF EDINBURGH
The Royal Society of Edinburgh is Scotland’s
national academy of science and letters.
With over 1400 peer-elected fellows, known as 'Fellows of
the Royal Society of Edinburgh', it provides annual grants
of over half a million pounds for research and entrepreneurship.
At the beginning of the 18th century, Edinburgh’s intellectual
climate fostered many clubs and societies, the most prestigious
of which was the Philosophical Society, founded in 1738.
With the help of University of Edinburgh professors like
physician Joseph Black (1728 – 1799) and naturalist
John Walker (1730 – 1803) this society became the Royal
Society of Edinburgh in 1783.
